Moderna Hantavirus mRNA Vaccine Project (2024 Collaboration)

In 2024, Moderna partnered with Korea University’s Vaccine Innovation Center (VIC-K) on an mRNA-based hantavirus vaccine under the company’s mRNA Access Program. This initiative supports academic researchers working on emerging or neglected infectious diseases. The collaboration built on earlier discussions from around 2021 and a formal R&D agreement signed in September 2023.

VIC-K provided hantavirus antigen sequence information. Moderna supplied corresponding mRNA materials and preclinical candidates. Researchers at the center conducted antigen expression studies and reported preclinical results in mice showing protection against infection. The effort targets hantaviruses linked to Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which affects hundreds annually in South Korea, primarily young men in military service or high-risk areas. An existing inactivated vaccine (Hantavax) has been available in Korea since 1990 but offers limited long-term protection and narrower strain coverage.

The project aligns with broader interest in hantavirus as a potential “Disease X” pathogen. A July 2024 seminar co-hosted by VIC-K and Moderna outlined next steps. As of early 2026 reports, the work remains preclinical. Human clinical trials await additional funding (estimated at 10-20 billion won for GMP material production) and regulatory approvals. No U.S.-focused program or widespread rollout exists….yet.

Critics in independent circles view the timing—amid recent hantavirus news like a cruise ship incident—as suspicious, given Moderna’s COVID-19 mRNA profits and multiple parallel hantavirus vaccine/gene therapy efforts (including U.S. Army DNA-based platforms). Some question whether such developments reflect genuine preparedness or set the stage for future interventions, drawing parallels to past pandemic responses and concerns over mRNA technology safety and rapid deployment.

Proponents frame it as standard research extension of Moderna’s platform for global health gaps, continuing legacy work from Korean scientists who first isolated relevant hantaviruses.
