Covfefe is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse named after a viral 2017 tweet by then-President Donald Trump, who posted, “Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” sparking widespread speculation and memes due to the apparent typo. Jaime Roth, co-owner of LNJ Foxwoods stable, chose the name for its humor and the horse’s promising pedigree, noting the filly’s sire, Into Mischief, and dam, Antics, fit the playful moniker. Roth, who didn’t vote for Trump, saw the name as a lighthearted nod rather than a political statement.
Foaled on February 22, 2016, in Kentucky, Covfefe was purchased for $250,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Trained by Brad Cox, she debuted on September 16, 2018, at Churchill Downs, winning a maiden special weight race by 9¼ lengths. Her three-year-old season in 2019 was exceptional, with five wins in six starts, including the Grade 1 Test Stakes, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and a track-record-breaking performance in the Miss Preakness Stakes (1:07.70 for six furlongs at Pimlico). She earned $1,110,025 over her career, winning six of eight races.
Covfefe’s success led to two 2019 Eclipse Awards: American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and American Champion Female Sprint Horse, a rare dual honor. Her Breeders’ Cup win on November 2, 2019, at Santa Anita, where she outran Bellafina by three-quarters of a length, drew national attention, with media like CNN and Fox News covering the story due to her name’s political connection. Trump himself tweeted about the victory, suggesting “covfefe” might have “deep meaning.”

The horse had her own Twitter account … @CovfefeHorse which playfully jabbed at Trump’s tweets, like referencing his “witch hunt” comments with “The Greatest #CovfefeHunt In American History!” Her fame extended beyond racing, inspiring merchandise like T-shirts and hoodies from Old Smoke Clothing Co., and even a “Words with Friends” dictionary entry for “Covfefe.”
Retired in February 2020 to focus on breeding, Covfefe now resides at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, where she was bred to Constitution. Her first foal, Ellen Jay, won the 2023 Glen Cove Stakes. Covfefe’s story blends racing excellence with pop culture, her name forever tied to a quirky moment in internet history
